When should wisdom teeth be removed?
Wisdom tooth removal can be necessary for many reasons, but however it may sound scary, it is actually a very common procedure and it is painless too.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars of the dentition, which usually erupt between the ages of 18 and 25. Many times, the wisdom tooth does not fit in the jaw, grows crookedly or does not erupt at all, puts pressure on the adjacent tooth and causes pain. Since they are located very far back, it is more difficult to reach them, and for this reason their proper cleaning can be a problem, which can result in tooth decay, as well as tartar forming on them more easily and they are also more vulnerable to gingivitis and pocket formation.
In many cases, they do not have enough space to grow out, they remain partially or completely in the jawbone (even horizontally), they do not break out, but they report complaints to the patient. For example, they can cause crowding of the other teeth, which changes the bite, even causing joint complaints. For this reason, the removal of wisdom teeth can also be a prerequisite for orthodontic treatment, so that they do not destroy the adjusted dental arch and smile later on.
Complaints that wisdom teeth can cause:
-
Painful, tense feeling in the jaw, in the area of the jaw joint
-
Tooth decay, tartar formation
-
Tooth congestion
-
Inflammations around teeth and gums
-
Cheek bite, minor wounding
-
Swollen lymph node
-
Pain radiating into the ear and throat
-
Bad breath
However, the removal of wisdom teeth is not always neccessary (in the lack of symptoms and problems), each case is treated separately and individually by the attending dentist.
How does the treatment work?
Before wisdom tooth surgery, first we always take a CT scan to get a detailed picture of the position and root of the given tooth and the condition and location of the nerve canal. Tooth extraction takes place under local anesthesia and is completely painless, patients feel almost nothing from the intervention.
After the tooth has been removed, the wound is filled with healing materials (in most cases with absorbable suture material) and stitched together. If necessary, we use soft laser treatment, which accelerates wound healing and reduces inflammation.
After tooth extraction, it is important that the blood coagulates at the site of the tooth and a blood clot forms, the role of which is very important in terms of wound healing. That is why it is forbidden to poke, suck, gargle, or blow the nose.
In our clinics, before the treatment, our patients always receive detailed verbal and written information about oral care at home.
If necessary, a wound check is due after 7-10 days.
What should you pay attention to before and after the treatment?
Wisdom tooth surgery does not require any special preparation, however, proper oral hygiene is essential for the success of the treatment. If the Patient has tartar, it must be removed before, in order to ensure proper wound healing. What is also important is that they eat at home before the procedure and do not come to the surgery with an empty stomach. In some cases, if it is prescribed by the doctor, the removal of the tooth may be preceded by a course of antibiotics.
In the 5-7 days after the treatment, some things must be carefully followed in order to heal! What are the most important?
-
You must not consume milk and egg products of animal origin (you can replace them with plant-based milk products)
-
Any physical exertion that causes a rise in blood pressure must be avoided, e.g. sports activities, lifting, bending, hanging the head
-
It is forbidden to drink alcohol, coffee or carbonated soft drinks
-
No smoking
-
The wound must not be sucked, poked, or rinsed
-
Avoid wellness activities (massage, sauna, solarium, swimming pool, sunbathing, etc.)
-
Grainy, small pieces of food that can easily get into the wound should be avoided (e.g. rice, corn, peas, currants, poppy seeds)
-
Do not eat hot, spicy or spicy food/drink
If someone does physical work, it is better staying at home for a few days after the intervention.
Will the area of the operation hurt?
In the 1-4 days after tooth extraction, it is normal for the face to be sore or swollen in the area of the procedure. If this condition persists for longer than 5 days, or in case of strong, throbbing pain, the patient should consult with the doctor. It is allowed to compress the intervention area (with a cold wet cloth, with a cooling bag intended for this purpose), but it is forbidden to apply ice! You should sleep with your head elevated on an elevated pillow. In case of pain, painkillers can be taken if the Patient feels the need. Based on the experience and feedback of the patients, it can be said that there is no need to expect significant pain in the days following the intervention.
When can I eat again after surgery and what?
Eating and drinking after the intervention is allowed at the earliest when the effect of the anesthetic has worn off, and the Patient is able to feel the surgery area again. During wound healing, you must not chew on the side affected by the tooth extraction, but on the opposite side you can eat according to the regulations.
Recommended foods:
- Plant-based dairy products, cheeses
- Vegan food
- Steamed and fried vegetables, salad, fruits
- Cooked potatoes
- Steamed and fried meats (well done)
- Soups, vegetables without milk and eggs
- Durum (milk and egg-free) pasta dishes
How long is the recovery time?
Every wisdom tooth is different, it depends on the case and the individual, but if the patient has complied with everything and the wound has healed nicely, approx. after 1 week, the patient can even eat again without restrictions and do any activity. In addition, pain and discomfort also disappear. However, full recovery may take 4-6 weeks.
